It is based on the popular Ubuntu OS. Greenie Linux is available in the following editions:

- a CD edition with open source and proprietary software,
- a DVD edition with extra software and a bundled repository,
- a mini-CD for building an operating system from a small base, and a special edition for webmasters.

Greenie Linux primarily supports Slovak and Czech, but the DVD edition also provides language modules for other central European languages.

History

Project is not very deeply rooted yet. First experiments were called Elvenbuntu. This system was only “first-fruit” and has existed only for short period of time. For the real beginning of the project Greenie Linux – that time called Green Linux, we can consider the date of 14th September 2007. Today, only few days after, Linux has few testing releases, its own philosophy and a group of people with common thinking is forming around…

Philosophy

Greenie Linux has a different philosophy in comparison to his base Ubuntu. The main philosophy is possibility to choose. Usually a man has at least 2 possibilities. It’s regular when choosing the software, version of distribution or the way how to work with the system. Greenie is OS which appreciate free software and that’s why his basic version is absolutely free. At the same time there is a version where the free software exists with a software which is non-free. Possibility to choose is always up to user of Greenie.

Vector Linux is a fast, small, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of Vector Linux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere.

For the casual computer user you have a lightening fast desktop with graphical programs to handle your daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on ICQ or IRC to running an ftp server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile their own programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for their home or office computer network.

Administrators will be equally as pleased because the small size and memory requirements of the operating system can be deployed on older machines maybe long forgotten.

Well here it is. we couldn’t let the soho people have all the fun could we? This live-cd represents as close as possible VectorLinux 5.1 standard. It comes with kernel 2.6.15.3 udev-085 ndiswrapper 1.9, and everything else from standard, like icewm, fluxbox, and xfce4.

Please download and help us find some bugs to squash

We would like to thank all the developers, testers, The VectorLinux community, and the developer of linux-live scripts from www.linux-live.org.

What’s New in 5.8 Stable Release:

· The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the release of VectorLinux 5.8 Live CD and the first SOHO 5.8 alpha live CD and DVD. This is the final release for 5.8 standard GOLD live. The hard drive installer that has been problematic is fixed and should work well. The SOHO 5.8 alpha live comes in either CD or DVD editions. The DVD edition includes all that is in the SOHO 5.8 install release plus 62 additional language packs for KDE. The CD version has lost some functionality due to size constraints. The development tool chain and OpenOffice.org were removed.

What’s New in 5.9 Beta 1 Development Release:

· The VectorLinux team is pleased to announce the release of VectorLinux 5.9 live CD beta 1. This is the first live release of 5.9. The hard drive installer has been updated and works well; it includes GParted for hard drive partitioning. The live CD demonstrates all that is making the 5.9 VectorLinux release famous, like browser plugins, SeaMonkey, Firefox and Opera. The newest Xfce desktop, AbiWord and Gnumeric, vasm and vl-hot. The latest wireless drivers and configuration tools, support for read and write to NTFS partitions via FUSE and NTFS-3G. There are great graphics and lots of fun and games.

GoboLinux is a Linux distribution that breaks with the historical Unix directory hierarchy. Basically, this means that there are no directories such as /usr and /etc. The main idea of the alternative hierarchy is to store all files belonging to an application in its own separate subtree; therefore we have directories such as /Programs/GCC/2.95.3/lib.

To allow the system to find these files, they are logically grouped in directories such as /System/Links/Executables, which, you guessed it, contains symbolic links to all executable files inside the Programs hierarchy.

To maintain backwards compatibility with traditional Unix/Linux apps, there are symbolic links that mimic the Unix tree, such as “/usr/bin -> /System/Links/Executables”, and “/sbin -> /System/Links/Executables” (this example shows that arbitrary differentiations between files of the same category were also removed).

It is geared towards people who prefer to install applications from the original source packages. That is the main reason why each application gets its own directory: so you can install it from source there and then remove it with an “rm -rf”. So, you see, GoboLinux is oriented at the experienced user who doesn’t like things to be automagical. Our scripts merely automate procedures, but they don’t “make decisions”, and whenever they have to, they ask first.

The binary package collection was created as a way to avoid duplication of effort between users. The source package project was created to store “compilation rules” of the original source packages of the applications. We do not wish to estabilish a “packaging standard” such as RPM. We think that there is no real need for “packages” if the original .tar.gz is properly made. For instance, when an application uses the GNU AutoTools (autoconf, automake…) you don’t need any GoboLinux package to keep your system consistent.

However, given the more logical directory tree, GoboLinux could be made, with a comprehensive binary package collection and graphical front-ends to the scripts, into a newbie-friendly distribution, but that is not a specific goal we seek (at least not in short or mid term).

GoboLinux relies on a series of tools that automate various tasks, such as generation, installation and removal of packages, and most importantly, maintainance of the symbolic links that keep the system consistent. These tools (mostly are shell scripts, actually) are fairly stable, since the idea behind GoboLinux is not new (see question about the origins of GoboLinux).

Another important issue when using a distribution is the availability of packages, ie, software that you can download in binary form and install in it straight away. In this aspect, GoboLinux is very young and far behind the other estabilished distributions. We have, however, all packages needed to get a running system (all packages that are part of “Linux From Scratch” and “Beyond Linux From Scratch” projects, for example), plus many others, such as KDE and all related packages, Tcl/Tk, and the list just won’t stop growing. Check out the latest list. In this sense, is important to popin out that we are working to bring other distribution’s facilities, such as the Gentoo Portage system, to GoboLinux.

What’s New in This Release:

· We are pleased to introduce GoboLinux 014, the new major release of GoboLinux, the Linux distribution with an alternative directory structure. This release is the result of over a year of work. The live CD build environment is highly customizable and packages were built using a dynamically-generated sandboxed environment which insulates the source code and its dependencies during compilation. Major upgrades include KDE 3.5.8, glibc 2.5 and X.Org 7.2, as well as new versions of the GoboLinux management tools.

KANOTIX is a Linux live CD based on Knoppix technology using Debian/sid.

The included XFree86 is from Debian/experimental. The main specs are: GRUB based startup from CD, ACPI support, DMA default on, additional support for DSL modems (Fritz!Card DSL and Eagle USB), optimal for HD install (you get a working Debian/sid install in about 10 minutes!), kernel forcedeth (for nForce NIC), device mapper and some other patches.

Simply boot from CD and enjoy Linux. Some tools may request a root password. As none is set, you have to set one using “sudo passwd” or use “su” in konsole.

Whenever you execute something with root permissions, you should know what you are doing! For web surfing over LAN no root access is required. I am sure you can discover many things to do with it

Don’t try to write to NTFS partitions using the standard NTFS driver included with the kernel, as its support for writing is very lacking – thus it could destroy the partition and the data in it.

There is a new Captive NTFS driver that does a better job at writing to NTFS, so use it instead. For FAT partitions you can enable write-access with the context menu (right mouse button).

You may not have the rights to modify Linux partitions, use the root mode in konsole if needed. Some links are not working in the menu – that is not my fault – the packages from Debian/sid are very new and may have some little bugs, but you can always use new releases.

What’s New in This Release:

· Kernel 2.6.24 (Ubuntu kernel with modifications and some patches); ACPI and DMA enabled by default; i586 optimization; Acritox installer – install program with many new functions; actual KANOTIX theme; X.Org 7.1.1, Beryl 0.2.0, VDR 1.5.2, ALSA 1.0.14, NDISwrapper 1.50; Aufs and Unionfs support; GParted 0.3.3 with NTFS resize; NTFS-3G used by default; KDE 3.5.5, OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, Amarok 1.4.8, K3b 1.0.4; IceWeasel 2.0.0.10, IceDove mail and news client 1.5.0.13, GIMP 2.2.13; automatic installation of graphic drivers with ‘nvidia’ and ‘fglrx’ options. If the RC7 is not starting on your PC take the RC6C release, the difference is the kernel!

· MEPIS has announced that the release candidate of a community built and maintained ultra-lite derivative of MEPIS has been released for public testing. AntiX is the brainchild of a MEPIS community member, who wanted a version of MEPIS that would work well on very old PC hardware. AntiX is not a lite version of SimplyMEPIS and it is not an official product of MEPIS.

The SME Server server and gateway is free software (also referred to as open-source software) and is freely available for anyone to download.

This software is brought to you by the community and contribs.org. Many individuals and organizations (both commercial and non-profit) use the SME Server as their primary network server and gateway.

We would like to remind you that the SME Server software is licensed under the General Public License (GPL). This means that if you alter the software and distribute the altered version, you must make the source code for your altered version freely available.

The GPL is a large part of why free software has made such an impact on the commercial scene. By restricting anyone from making proprietary modifications, the GPL ensures that improvements find their way back to the original code base, thereby creating an explosive rate of technical advance.

The difference between traditional development and GPL development is the difference between a light bulb – where output is radiated in many directions – and a laser – where output is reflected back in a coherent way to produce a greater, more focused result.

Its main design focus is simple, centralized configuration, along with security and ease of installation.

What’s New in This Release:

· The SME Server development team is pleased to announce the release of SME Server 7.3. This release is based on CentOS 4.6 and all packages have been updated to the latest releases. Changes in this release: using ’sme multipart’ boot parameter now enables quotas on all LVMs; support for disconnect option in rhsbl plugin; support for disconnect immediately if dnsbl plugin rejects recipient addresses; newer version of ipsvd to resolve a few Thunderbird issues; support for configurable timeouts; now able to remove Corporate DNS setting; RAID reconstruction now finishes after using ’sme nolvm’ passed at install time; ability to use console restore with CD or DVD recordable media….
